Outline of itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Bucharest airport and transfer to hotel in Brasov

Days 2-8

Walking expedition across Fagaras ridge

Day 9

Day off in Brasov

Day 10

Transfer to Bucharest airport

The range stretches from Brasov in the east to the Olt valley in the west and at 70km long and 40km wide forms the largest mountain massif in Romania. It contains the highest mountain in Romania, Moldoveanu (2544m) and for 50kms does not fall below 2000m making the Fagaras ridge one of Europe’s highest continuous ridge walks.

The 7 day trek starts with an ascent through the extensive forests that surround the massif and are home to bears, wolves and lynx. Romania has the largest population in Europe. We then ascend for a Traverse of the ridge on a path, which for most of its length follows the crest, giving superb uninterrupted views to the north and south.

We will pass by isolated glacial tarns and through alpine meadows as we progress towards the highest mountain Moldoveanu and then on towards the hardest part of the walk were we encounter some short sections of scrambling which are all protected by cables and chains, eventually we arrive at Romanias second highest mountain Negiou (2535m).

Our journey will take us to places with names like, Fereastra Zmeilor (Dragons window), La Trei pasi de Moarte (Three steps from death) and Strunga Dracului (Devils chimney) all evoking the medieval times of the regions distant passed.

On our descent we again encounter the forest on our way to Sebesu de Sus and will have a chance to see the rural way of life still practiced in this region after hundreds of years and may be even catch a lift on a passing cart.

This trip takes us into a remote mountain region and consists of 2-3 nights camping and 3-4 nights in mountain huts depending on the weather. Therefore all camping equipment will need to be carried. The walking can be demanding but is not technically difficult except for the few areas of scrambling which are suitable for the experienced walkers.
